John D Constable travelling fellow

I was awarded the American Association of
Plastic Surgeons (AAPS) -John D Constable
travelling scholarship for the year 2018. This
award is for young practicing plastic surgeons
with an experience of 2 to 3 years and provides
a stipend of 10000 USD to cover the travel and
stay expenses in different parts of the United
States over 6-12 weeks or more depending if
the person chooses to stay longer.
I came to know about AAPS – John Constable
travelling fellowship from a website called
Trielect.com, which helps in finding the right
fellowship or research opportunities
The applicant needs to define his objectives
while applying for this fellowship and how he
would benefit from it. This should be the main
content of the essay that is required as a part of
the application process. Along with the essay,
they also need two letters of recommendation,
one from the head of the department of the
institute where the applicant is working, and
another from any mentor. The application can
be applied online and usually the last date is
October end or second week of November.
The results are announced by the first week of
march. The scholarship recipient is informed
by email and their names are announced in
AAPS meeting in first week of April.

It is a huge opportunity for young plastic
surgeons to interact with American faculty
and bring out the best in themselves and their
country. An international experience widens
the horizons and perspective of different
aspects of practice management. It has been
an educational feast for me to visit the centers
of eminence in the United states and learn
from stalwarts in their fields.
Breast reconstruction is growing in India
due to increasing incidence in breast
cancer. Women are becoming more aware
and are choosing reconstruction as a part
of their complete treatment. However, it
is unfortunate to see a large gap between
women undergoing mastectomy and women
opting for reconstruction. There is a definite
scope for more awareness and availability of
good Reconstructive surgeons to give the
most Aesthetic outcome to a patient. A good
outcome will encourage more women to opt
for reconstruction. This was my vision while
applying for the John D Constable fellowship.
