Most of us succeed through hard work, self-direction,
learning from our mistakes and some wise words from
friendly colleagues and mentors.
BAAPS Support was born out of the knowledge that
this gap exists. It was the brainchild of Paul Harris, Past
President of the BAAPS and set up by the first Chair, Mike
Tyler in 2019. BAAPS Support acts as a sister organisation
to the BAAPS. BAAPS Support is a company set up by and
owned by the BAAPS. Its purpose is to support our plastic
surgeon members. This allows the BAAPS to concentrate
on training, education, patient safety and aesthetic
regulation while BAAPS Support acts directly on behalf
and for the benefit of its members. I took over as Chair in
March 2020 when Mike took on a senior role in the NHS
just as the COVID-19 pandemic swept through the UK.
We were kickstarted into action by the pandemic and the
first UK lockdown in March 2020. Our 2020 work plan
flew out the window and we had to react quickly to help
our members. No aesthetic surgery could take place and
we could not even see most of our patients in person. Our
members were really feeling under pressure and suffering
from the impact of this.
Instead of the business conference planned, we switched
to a series of weekly Business Continuity Webinars which
ran every week through April and May 2020 to help and
advise our members. We covered a huge range of topics
from explaining the latest and everchanging government
financial support and schemes to virtual consultations
to marketing in a time of crisis to implementing safe and
practical protocols in our clinics so that we could reopen
safely. We also drew on the experience of overseas friends
who had experienced shutdowns before, who were also
working out protocols to resume practice and our plastic
surgery business owner colleagues across the UK. As well
