EXPECTING THE UNEXPECTED
Expecting the unexpected was something that had become part of my every day
work. Challenges kept surfacing in all forms and directions. Waking up to the
traumatic news of a patient committing suicide in the ward was disheartening
and demoralizing. And then there are patients under custodial care for heinous
crime, one of them even escaped which put an additional demand on ensuring
the security.
There were challenges posed for hosting COVID positive pediatric patients
whose parents were COVID negative. There were patients with psychiatric
issues and other disabilities, COVID positive ladies in labour, twin pregnancies,
patients requiring emergency surgery also posed its own problems to tackle.
The last journey of the deceased in COVID scenario was to be taken care of as
well with no compromise on safety and take care of all the sentiments of those
who had lost their dear ones. Prayers and respect to all of them for having
taught us in their life and death.
Any administrator would desire to build a system that is self-sustaining and runs
on auto pilot in order to reduce the stress and anxiety. We had to tackle the
problems when the system itself came under severe strain. The perceptions
vary and one man’s glory becomes other man’s misery. Issues were raised by the
Nursing association, Resident Doctor’s association, Group D staff, Quarantine
team about the PPE standard, food and safety at the stay provided, duty roster.
We were successful in handling all these issues with sympathy and understanding
so that the operations were in no way hampered.
