n article in the BMA News states that “Doctors who work in the field of reconstructive surgery
often tend to have an excellent grasp of anatomy, but when it comes to aesthetics – the shape
A of, and spatial relationship between, individual features – they can be less confident” (1). While
possibly an over exaggeration, it is true to say that the training received by plastic surgeons favours surgical

protocol over the development of spatial awareness.

Luke Shepherd is a Devon based portrait sculptor known for his commissioned bronzes including Billy
Connolly and Baroness Floella Benjamin. As an art educator Luke has designed and taught “Sculpture for

Surgeons” for the past 20 years.

The course is convened by Simon Withey MS FRCS FRCS(Ed) FRCS(Plast) and offers delegates a structured
training to learn to perceive, appreciate and understand the complexity of facial topography. This directly

assists the surgeon in their clinical work giving them the confidence to see shapes and forms more clearly
            and achieve better results.
