Now the same question will arise – which approach one should master?

The answer is – both open and closed.

The explanation is simple - A general surgeon must have mastery in both open and laproscopic
surgery, as not all cases can be done using laproscope or when stuck, should be able to open and
complete the surgery achieving favourable results. Similarly an established rhinoplasty surgeon
must master both the approaches so she could operate based on the merit of the case.

In the beginning we usually follow our mentor’s way. One who is not acquainted with either
approach, must start with open approach and after acquiring the knowledge and experience,
 explore the closed approach.

Thus we see how the philosophy behind rhinoplasty has evolved from closed approach -to- open
 – and back to closed approach covering a full circle or a 360 degrees turn in the last century. I
am hopeful that this write up shall bring some clarity in the minds of the the plastic surgeons
embarking on this exciting field of rhinoplasty and making it less daunting.
